While the Birkin bag is a global icon and the Kelly exudes glamorous elegance, the Hermes Constance’s best feature is its versatility. Far more compact than a Hermes Birkin for example, the Hermes Constance comes in four sizes: the mini, micro, 24cm and finally the Elan which is slightly wider in shape. Despite its luxuriousness, the bag’s flexibility ultimately leads it to be an easy-wearing bag for those lucky enough to own one. Combining this feature with an adjustable strap that can be worn over the shoulder or by your side, illustrates why the Constance seems to be an evergreen fashion icon. What is perhaps most striking about the Hermes Constance bag is its signature ‘H’ shaped fastener, which immediately draws a crowd’s attention. With its leather shoulder strap allowing the bag to hang freely, it soon became the favourite former First Lady of the United States, Jacqueline Kennedy who popularised the Constance amongst Hollywood’s elite. The bag was first designed by Catherine Chaillet in 1959 and was given the name in honour of her fifth child, Constance, having delivered the baby the same day that the first Constance left the Hermes production store.
