Since the child is able to sound words for himself and to become an independent reader early, the phonetic method gives him a meaningful, challenging, and satisfying approach to the learning of words. He sees that words are composed of small parts, sounded consecutively. Phonics gives the child an orderly way of learning to read. It takes no longer to learn sounds that compose words than it does to memorize whole words, and the phonetic sounds are the tools that enable the child to sound out every new word that he sees. Learning the sounds enables a child to identify most of the vocabulary words for himself.

This approach to teaching reading is employed in this series for the following reasons: The Bible Nurture and Reader Series uses a combination of phonics and sight-reading approach: the students learn to read a few words by sight immediately, thereby getting off to a prompt start in comprehension phonics is taught from the very beginning, enabling the child to sound out words for himself.

We have found, as other researchers have also concluded, that a strictly phonetic approach to reading hinders comprehension, whereas a strictly sight-reading approach impedes both reading and comprehension. The parents of children who learn from this series are delighted to find their first graders reading quite well already after only 4 or 5 months, and sounding out new words with surprising ease. The Bible Nurture and Reader Series has been written to teach children to read. How? At base, stick with the core subjects with Rod and Staff, your children will, if you invest the time, excel at any diagnostic exam. I find that parents who use Rod and Staff can use the core curriculum effectively while leaving science and other subjects unit studies or other teaching style directed with other supplements to meet their teaching style needs or student preferences. Rod and Staff is workbook based and modeled after a school setting. I also recommend their supplement in Knowing God's Stars- you can use in lower grades besides the recommended and combine it with unit or Charlotte Mason style science. The Bible and morality in Rod and Staff is the main reward and the outstanding education is the cherry on top so I am willing to be more "school oriented" in exchange for the peace of mind of education it offers. The reward is that your child can master advanced core curriculum. You do not need a chalk board or a teacher's desk or bell, this curriculum is easily modified to the home-school setting. I suggest to get the maximum results, do not skip on teacher suggestions in the manual.
#Rod and staff weekly lesson planner manual
If you enjoy TEACHING then you will really enjoy their teacher manual directions. Rod and Staff is mainly created for the Christian private school and thus employs such teaching methods. This is not a curriculum for mothers needing "free time" or for educators whose teaching style is non-teacher directed education. Most importantly, Rod and Staff has been very diligent in keeping the Bible and Godliness the main theme, not just "candy" or "decoration" or a side bar addition. I find that they are good at keeping your child "ahead of the curve" in the core curriculum as well as solid Godly perspectives in the extracurricular courses. I have found this curriculum to be very educational in teaching the Reading, Writing, Arithmetic, and other subjects. This curriculum is no sell out when it comes to education but comes with a cost. Reviewer has not reached upper level Rod and Staff materials. Note: This review only encompasses elementary.
